Farrance named Hobey-10 finalist; This Day in BU Hockey

The honors keep coming for defenseman David Farrance. After being named a Hockey East First Team All-Star and a USCHO First-Team All-Star, the junior from Victor, N.Y., was announced as a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Farrance is the 14th Terrier to become a Top 10 Hobey finalist and the second defenseman, joining Matt Gilroy who won the award in 2009. Gilroy, Chris Drury (1998) and Jack Eichel (2015) are BU's three Hobey Baker winners.

This Date in BU Hockey—March 19

1994: Terriers won their third Hockey East Championship, defeating UMass Lowell, 3-2, at Boston Garden. Kenny Rausch’s second-period tally proved to be the game-winner after Jon Pratt and Mike Grier scored earlier in the game. J.P. McKersie (photo), a second-team All-American that season, stopped 20 shots as BU outshot Lowell, 40-22.  The win marked the first time BU had won both the regular-season and tournament titles, and began a run of three Hockey East titles in four seasons: ’94, ’95 and ’97.

One more from yesterday, March 18: the 2006 Hockey East Championship game.

BU won its eighth conference title, defeating BC, 2-1, in overtime at TD Garden on Brandon Yip’s goal at 14:22 of the extra period, completing a 3-on-2 rush with line mates Jason Lawrence and Chris Higgins. The Eagles had outshot BU 10-3 prior to the goal by HE Rookie of the Year Yip. BC had taken a 1-0 first period lead on a Mike Brennan goal. The Terriers, who outshot BC 35-20 in regulation, tied the score on a John McCarthy goal, assisted by Brian McGuirk and Ryan Weston. 2006 second-team All-American goalie John Curry (first-team in 2007) held off the Eagles’ onslaught until Yip’s game-winner. Three seasons later, Yip scored the only goal in the 2009 HE title game to become the only player to score the game-winner in two conference championship games.
