UPDATED Devils roster Lachance; Lacroix blanks RPI; SNL; Polls; POW for Hutson; Willander to AHL

UPDATE

Both of last season's Terrier co-captains open the season on NHL rosters. Earlier  we reported Ryan Greene (see Looking back) earned a Blackhawks roster spot. Now, Shane Lachance has made the Devils' opening night roster

Junior netminder Max Lacroix turned aside 21 shots as the Terriers completed a two-game weekend sweep with a 3-0 exhibition win over Rensselaer. He was backed by goals from Captain Gavin McCarthy and freshmen Jonathan Morello and Ryder Ritchie. Cole Eiserman, who played another strong two-way game, assisted on all three tallies.

The Terriers had a bit of scare in the first period when sophomore Sacha Boisvert was checked heavily into the boards and immediately went down the tunnel for medical attention. He returned to the bench, but not to the ice, forcing BU to juggle lines for the duration.

Check back later for updated polls from USCHO and USA Hockey.

Post-game, Coach Jay Pandolfo explained that sitting his top line center down was "Just precautionary. We were not going to put him back in tonight. It's not worth it."

Boisvert had a strong start to his Terrier career in Saturday's win with a goal and two assists.

Freshman Conrad Fondrk did not dress again but is expected to play next weekend. Classmate Carter Amico, who made his debut against LIU, also sat out as BU seeks to "manage his workload especially in the first  few weeks of the season. It was his first game, last night, in 10 or 11 months," according to Pandolfo.

BU spent the early minutes of the game contending with an aggressive forecheck by the Engineers. Even when they picked up their skating, the Terriers struggled to put quality shots on goal. Shots in the first period were 11-9 BU, including an unsuccessful power play for the home team.

"We came out slow, and I give them credit," Pandolfo said after the game. They came out ready to play."

Terriers tightened up defensively in the middle period, limiting the visitors to three shots on goal to BU's nine, but they were not able to open the scoring until late in the period. Shortly after killing the only penalty it took all night, BU broke the ice when Cole Eiserman set up McCarthy for a wrist shot from the right circle that deflected past goalie Nate Crawchuk. Cole Hutson collected the second assist.

BU carried the slim lead into the third period. Midway through the period, consecutive RPI penalties gave the Terriers a brief 5-on-3 that they failed to convert on. But during the man-advantage from the second infraction, they would double their lead. Cole Hutson faked a drop pass, then entered the offensive zone. He mesmerized three RPI defenders before slipping a pass to a trailing Morello who blistered a shot from the left circle that found the net. Second assist went to Eiserman.

The Engineers pulled their goalie with about four minutes remaining and were able to generate a few grade-A shots that were turned aside by Lacroix. With less than two minutes in regulation, Eiserman outfought an attacker to free the puck, which Kamil Bednarik sent to Ritchie. The Minnesota Wild draft pick's pass slid the puck to Eiserman, then took a return pass and fired into the empty-net to seal the win.

SNL (Saturday and Sunday Night Leftovers)

Terriers have chosen a new prize to recognize the player of the game: a BU football helmet. First two winners are Eiserman and Lacroix.

The Agganis Arena banners have been updated to reflect BU’s 32nd Beanpot title and its 25th Frozen Four appearance.

BU Hockey Stats reports that "Cole Hutson becomes the fastest Terrier defenseman (40 games) to reach 50 points since Dick Lamby in 1977, who did it in just 25 games."

Goalie Mikhail Yegorov punctuated Saturday’s win with his patented victory celly.

In the two games, Ritchie has displayed skills and smarts. Although drafted second round, many believe he brings first-round talent. And he's quite used to playing with super-skilled guys. He played youth hockey with Macklin Celebrini, Major Junior with Gavin McKenna and now skates with the Coles and Boisvert.
