There are three days until the puck drops on the 2025-26 season
A standout on the BU blueliner for three seasons and an All-American, Kevin Shattenkirk generated 78 points as a Terrier with the biggest coming when he set up Colby Cohen's overtime game-winner in the 2009 national championship game. He then captained the 2009-10 squad before embarking on a 13-year NHL career that concluded after spending the 2023-2024 season with the Bruins. He won the Stanley Cup in 2020 with Tampa Bay and now serves on the NHL Players Association staff.

►Boston Hockey Blog co-director Sam Robb O'Hagen has penned a gem of a feature story on Terrier assistant captain Cole Eiserman, the nation's top rookie goal-scorer last season. They explore the sophomore's goal-scoring approach and prowess by viewing and deconstructing several of the Newburyport, native's key scores.

Saturday's opponent
College Hockey Insider's Preseason Power Ranking has BU's home-opener opponent, LIU, at #57, a steep drop from the Sharks' #25 final Pairwise ranking last season. This is largely due to the loss of nearly two-thirds of their offensive production through graduation and transfers. A pair of transfers from Quinnipiac and Merrimack are expected to bolster the defense, while a new starter in goal must be determined.
CHI's Bottom Line: LIU Faces a Rebuild
Long Island drops more than any other team in my rankings this season after finishing 2024-25 ranked No. 25 in the Pairwise. There are simply too many losses to overcome, including the departures of key offensive contributors and a .920 goaltender in Tyriq Outen.
That said, Brett Riley found a way to keep the Sharks competitive, and new head coach Brendan Riley should be able to do the same. Long Island is a hockey hotbed, and the Sharks should return to being one of the top independent programs in short order.
We'll have more about LIU is Saturday's GameDay post.
Looking ahead
The Hockey News' look at 5 Rookies Who Could Dominate the OHL Rookie of the Year Race features 2026 recruit Caleb Malhotra, the league's early scoring leader.
Much like his father, former NHLer Manny Malhotra, Caleb has a high hockey IQ, which he utilizes to control the pace of the game when he has the puck. He’s also an above-average playmaker who can exploit open lanes in defensive coverage.

2026 recruit Haoxi Simon Wang is headed back to OHL Oshawa after participating in the Sharks' rookie camp and the team's main camp. He was the Sharks' second-round pick, #33 overall, in 2025 NHL draft. San Jose Hockey Now reports:
Wang is a raw defensive prospect, with less-high level hockey experience than most, but an impressive frame and great skating talent. Training camp provided a high-level of competition for the 18-year-old. While he sustained an upper-body injury at camp, Warsofsky said at training camp today that Wang will be heading back to Oshawa healthy.
Looking back
As the Chicago Blackhawks trim their training camp roster prior to their opening game, two Terriers remain in contention for roster spots while a third heads to the AHL. Drew Commesso, who made his NHL debut last season, will begin his third pro season in Rockford.
Meanwhile two BU captains--Ryan Greene and Matt Grzelcyk--are seeking the final forward and defense slots. The Chicago Sun-Times reports:
Young players Oliver Moore and Ryan Greene are likely battling each other for one available spot. Moore’s speed and tenacity have made him noticeable in every setting, and he’s probably the favorite.
But keeping Greene could help the Hawks in the faceoff circle — an overall team weakness. It’s rare and remarkable to see any rookie win 52.3% of his draws, even in the preseason.
Grzelcyk, in camp on a professional tryout contract, would provide veteran guidance and leadership if Chicago decides some younger candidates could use additional time in the AHL.
“If it was to work out, I could help some of those guys come along,” Grzelcyk said Friday, making his contract pitch. “[I would] not see it as me taking a spot from someone.”
A fourth Terrier, Alex Vlasic, became a mainstay on the Blackhawks' blueline last season and recently was named to the U.S. Olympic team orientation-camp roster.
Los Angeles Kings have assigned Jack Hughes, a 2022 second-round pick, to AHL Ontario, Calif.
NJ Devils have sent former Terrier Brian Carrabes, a free agent, to AHL Utica.
Carolina Hurricanes have assigned Domenick Fensore to AHL Chicago Wolves.
Wilmer Skoog had the primary assist on both Florida goals in a 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay.
Lane Hutson scored his first goal of the exhibition season and followed with an assist as Montreal blanked Ottawa, 5-0.
