Looking back

Tuesday night, Jake Oettinger stopped 39 of 41 shots to lead undefeated Dallas to its third win, 5-2 over Minnesota

Oettinger, a Minnesota native, is 8-0-3 in his NHL career against the Wild.

“It’s always fun. We’ve seen them a lot. I feel like they don’t like us very much,” Oettinger said. “Every time we play them, it feels like the playoffs. They’re physical, they’re big, they’re tough. It feels like a playoff game, so it’s always fun playing them.”

Jack Eichel scored a pair of goals, including the third-period game-winner as Vegas rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Calgary, 4-2. In four games, Eichel has a 4-5-9 scoring line.

Lane Hutson recorded his first point of the season, assisting on the overtime game-winner as Montreal edged Seattle, 5-4.

Poll story

Terriers take over the #1 ranking in the USCHO Division 1 Poll after a win and tie against Colgate. Three teams in last week’s top five (Western Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State) split their weekend series while Denver won and tied with Air Force. BU, who received 27 out of 50 first-place votes, is followed by WMU, the Spartans, next weekend’s opponents, Michigan and DU.

Graphic displays the NCAA Division I Mens College Hockey Poll for Week 3 on October 13 with rankings starting at 1 for Boston University previously 2 points 11 followed by 2 UMass previously 11 points 3 then 3 Western Michigan previously 1 points 12 and continuing down to 20 Colorado College receiving votes including team logos and conference affiliations like AHA Hockey BIG Hockey CCHA and NCHC at the bottom.

The USA Hockey Division 1 Poll closely mirrors USCHO. Top five are BU, WMU, Michigan, Michigan State and Denver. Terriers received 19 of 34 first-place votes. In both national polls, there are six Hockey East teams in the top 14. #1 in the Everything College Hockey ranking, as well. Puck Preps' Ryan Sikes has BU and MSU at #1 and #2.

BU Hockey Stats: "For the first time since January 22nd, 2024, Boston University is #1 in the USCHO poll."

Terriers also vaulted to the top spot in John Buccigross's rankings. He and Colby Cohen will be at Agganis to call Friday night’s game on ESPN2.

Cole Eiserman (2G,A), Cole Hutson (G,2A), Ryder Ritchie (G,2A) and Mikhail Yegorov (.922, 1.92) were named to Hockey East's Weekly Top Peformers' list

                 defkit's Terrier Takeaway

- As Saturday's game progressed and it was clear that BU wasn't going to win easily, I was reminded of the 2022-23 season when BU was beaten badly by Michigan 8-2 in Ann Arbor, only to come back and win a 3-2 decision the next night. There are few easy nights in D-1 hockey, and I think all the Freshmen learned that Saturday night. Fortunately, it was with a tie, not a loss.

- Speaking of ties, I don't really understand the purpose of the shootout in a non-league game. It literally has no impact on anything - no league point at stake, no Pairwise/NPI impact. I wonder if Coach Jay Pandolfo was even more critical of the team because he didn't want the happy crowd at the end to give the team the impression that they had won the game.

- This was a breakout game for Jack Murtagh. It took him a couple games to adjust to the speed of the game. He was a force and used his size and strength while showing his hands. I am picturing his impact being somewhere between Colin Wilson's and Devin Kaplan's. I am not going to expect him to be a Hobey Hat Trick finalist like Wilson, but I am hoping we get more scoring out him than we did Kaplan.

- Charlie Tretheway had his "welcome to D-1 hockey" moment when his pocket was picked leading to the first Colgate goal. We have to remember that these USNTDP players are 17-18 years old, often much younger than their teammates and opponents. Hopefully he will learn from the experience. In general, he, Carter Amico, and Malte Vass are going to have these moments over the first half of the season.

- We certainly had many chances to score in the third period, with Eiserman and Conrad Fondrk both missing wide-open nets. I knew the Sascha Boumedienne goal was going to be close, as many Colgate players raised their arms as the puck crossed over the blue line. I thought the Murtagh goal may be challenged, because from where I was sitting, it looked like the puck was very close to exiting the zone when he pounced on it.

- Jonathan Morello is emerging as a strong player. Getting secondary scoring from him could be critical to this team not relying too much on the top line.

SNL (Saturday Night Leftovers and a few from Friday)

Eiserman and Cole Hutson have had chemistry from their NTDP days together. Now, Eiserman and freshman Ryder Ritchie have shown, in a small three-game sample, an instant connection that yields scoring chances.

Mick Frechette’s first career goal, which earned him the player of the game helmet, came on his first shot of the season. Unfortunately, his 1.00 shooting percentage can only go down.

Along with its 92.9 penalty kill after three games, BU has produced strong face off numbers, 53.4% for the team led by Kamil Bednarik’s 62.5% wins and Brandon Svoboda’s 55.6%. Bruins draft pick Morello is at an even 50 percent.

Of the first-year forwards, Morello has emerged as a trusted penalty-killer, joining Bednarik, Svoboda and Jack Harvey

Two coaches seen at Agganis Saturday night: Jack Parker, whose name is on the rink, and former Dallas Stars coach Pete DeBoer, whose son Jack DeBoer was a Terrier.

Looking ahead

Elite Prospects' QMJHL Stock Watch gives a thumbs up to 2026 recruit Yegor Shilov, who was recently selected to play in the league's upcoming (Oct. 21) Top Prospects game, along with fellow recruit Rian Chudzinski

Yegor Shilov has arrived. The Victoriaville Tigres’ third-overall pick in the 2025 CHL Import Draft has wasted no time at all making his presence known in the QMJHL, racking up three goals and six assists in six games to start the 2025-26 campaign. [Now up to a team-high 4-10-14 in seven games].

After splitting his time between 16U AAA and the USHL last year, Shilov has acclimated incredibly well to the QMJHL game, making the most out of every puck touch with his blend of decent size, fluid skating, high-end dynamic skill and consistent engagement, which I highlighted in this September game report:

“One sequence stood out in the third period where he muscled through a check, faked with his hip pocket before tap-deking through a defender to the middle, but then opted for a pass instead of leveraging the clear shooting lane he had. Worked a lot of smart board-to-middle plays into his retrievals, either by stepping inside himself or by using his pre-scans to identify open teammates. Surprisingly polished and defensively engaged for a Russian QMJHL import (...)”

In a draft short on true centres, Shilov fits the mould — he back-tracks, stays above the puck, acts as a connective element between defencemen and wingers through his routes, and mostly does a great job identifying his man in zone coverage. So far, we at EliteProspects see him as a clear top-20 pick, and if he keeps this up, he’s unlikely to fall out of favour with our scouting team.

Another 2026 recruit, 5-⭐️center Braidy Wassilyn, made his season debut for the Niagara IceDogs after missing a month with an injury. Last year as a 16 year old, he set a franchise record for assists by a rookie (31) en route to a 39 point season.

Looking back

After a Calder Trophy-winning rookie season (6 goals, 60 assists in 82 games) Lane Hutson has inked an eight-year, $70.8 million contract covering 2026-27 to 2033-34. The deal will pay the two-time All-American an average annual salary of $8.85 million.

Trevor Zegras' remarkable pass set up the game-winner in the Flyers' 5-2 win over Florida.

Wilmer Skoog scored his first goal of the season in AHL Charlotte's 6-3 loss to Providence.
