Terriers find their game and skate past Colgate, 6-2; Milestone for Oettinger; Women fall to Raiders

Behind a pair of Cole Eiserman power-play goals and timely goaltending from Mikhail Yegorov, #3 Terriers dominated Colgate for a 6-2 win before 4,126 at Agganis Arena.  BU, who used a three-goal second period to pull away from the visitors, also received tallies from Cole Hutson and three first-time scorers: Mick Frechette, Ryder Ritchie and Jonathan Morello.

It was the sixth consecutive win for BU over the Raiders, although the most recent contest, a 6-1 victory, was in 2016. Terriers lead the series, which began in 1950, 22-11-0.

"I like our game really, from start to finish," said a pleased Head Coach Jay Pandolfo. "I thought we came out, we were moving the puck. We were skating. We were managing the puck well. We were getting behind them."

He added, "I just liked the pace of our game. I thought we carried through most of the game."

While BU came out fast in the opening period, applying a strong fore-check to break up Colgate rushes and recover pucks, it translated into only a few grade A chances. At 16:40 Yegorov made the best of his 11 first-period saves, robbing Simone Dadiè who was unmarked in the right circle.

Late in the period, shortly after Yegorov made a strong stop on a wrap-around attempt, BU got on the board with Hutson's second goal of the season. Last year's National Rookie of the Year danced in from the left point, fanned on his initial attempt, shot from outside the crease--it was saved by goalie Reid Dyck--and knocked home the rebound.  Assists went to Kamil Bednarik and Conrad Fondrk, making his Terrier debut.

Terriers doubled the lead five minutes into the middle period on strong O-zone pressure from the fourth line.  John McNelis fed Morello in the slot for a wrister that was saved. Frechette collected the rebound along the goal line to the goalie's left, wheeled and fired the puck past Dyck.

Two minutes later, BU scored again, this time on the rush. Eiserman brought the puck across the blue line and passed to Owen McLaughlin, cutting to the middle. The senior center, filling in for Sacha Boisvert, found Ritchie driving to the net for a quick backhand shot past Dyck. 3-0.

BU's third tally of the period came on a power play. After a shot attempt was blocked, Eiserman recovered the puck in the slot and slid it to Hutson at the left point. He quickly wired it to the right face off dot for an Eiserman one-timer, his third goal of the season.

The Raiders got on the board midway through the period. They kept the puck in at the point, creating a two-on-one, with Tyson Doucette popping the puck past Yegorov from in tight.   Late in the period, BU successfully killed a penalty for too many men on the ice--the third of that infraction in three contests.

BU continued to dominate puck possession in the final period, limiting the visitors to six shots.  A holding call on Dadiè gave the Terrier a third power-play opportunity. Hutson fired the puck around the end board and when it took an odd bounce off the glass, Ritchie controlled it. The former Medicine Hat Tigers standout set up Eiserman in the slot for a quick finish--the sophomore's fourth goal in two games.

After Isaiah Norlin scored for the Raiders on a power play, McLaughlin collided with Dyck while attempting to finish a play and drew an interference penalty. Colgate pulled the goalie to create a 6-on-4, but Morello broke up a play, pushed the puck ahead and scored a short-handed empty netter to close out the scoring.

Terriers converted on two of four power plays and killed four of five Colgate man-advantages, allowing just one shot. BU won 28 of 56 draws (though it seemed BU won even more), led by Bednarik who won 11 of 18 face offs.

       BU OLDTIMER's TERRIER TAKEAWAY

1. After a fairly even first period, BU used its speed and talent to take control of the game.

2. In particular, BU was quick and clean on breakouts from the d-zone.

3. BU dominated through center ice--hunting pucks from the get-go-- to shut down Colgate breakouts and set up extended possessions in the Colgate d-zone.

4. Yegorov made two big saves in the first period while it was still a contest.

5. The freshman defensemen, Amico, Tretheway and Vass continued to impress. Vass had several emphatic rub outs along the boards.

6. Ryder Ritchie was a standout. Wondering how good he'll become as he gains experience.

7. BU had two PP opportunities in the third period, resulting in one goal. The puck and player movement during these PP's was outstanding.

8. The Svoboda/Murtagh/Merrill unit has the makings of a solid third line.

9. Boumedienne appeared to take an awkward fall during the run-up to first Colgate goal. He missed a few shifts but returned in the third period.

Player of the Game helmet went to Frechette who, along with his goal, laid big hits on Colgate skaters and made some nice defensive plays

Saturday's rematch begins at 6 p.m. ET. Game links can be found here

#14 Terriers dropped a 3-1 decision to Colgate at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y.

BU took the initial lead at 7:40 of the opening period when freshman Lexie Bertelsen took a pass from Riley Walsh and rifled home a shot from the right circle. That held up until the final half minute of the period when Emma Pais scored for Colgate.

In the second period, BU drew consecutive penalties and on the second power play, Pais scored again. Terriers pressed for an equalizer, but came up short. An empty-net goal closed out the scoring.

Mari Pietersen stopped 28 of 30 shots for BU.

The teams meet again on Saturday with puck drop set for 6 p.m. ET.
