A furious third-period comeback that tied the score in
the final seconds wasn’t enough to bring the Beanpot back to Commonwealth
Avenue as Northeastern edged BU, 5-4, in double overtime before a packed house
at TD Garden.
Reeling after the Huskies’ four-goal second period had
erased a 2-0 BU lead, Terriers got an early power play goal from David Farrance
to cut the margin to one. Then with the goalie pulled, Farrance kept the puck
in the NU zone leading to a Trevor Zegras backhander at 19:58.4 that sent the
contest to overtime.

The NCAA-mandated five-minute overtime was scoreless with
BU outshooting NU, 5-0. Moving on to the 20-minute overtime, the Terriers kept
up the pressure with a 10-6 shot advantage. Fourteen minutes into the second
overtime, a very questionable tripping call on Patrick Harper put the Huskies
on the power play and Jordan Harris wired a shot from the right point past a
screened Sam Tucker to give Northeastern the win and a Beanpot three-peat.
Coming out fast and aggressively, BU had taken a 2-0
first period lead on goals by Jake Wise and Zegras. The second period was
another story as momentum moved to the NU side. A pair of even-strength goals—by
Tyler Madden and Aiden McDonough—knotted the score six minutes in.
Then, successive penalties to Cam Crotty and Alex Vlasic
gave Northeastern a 5-on-3 power play. The Huskies scored quickly on the
two-man advantage and again on a 5-on-4 to take control and chase Ashton Abel
from the BU cage. Tucker stopped the bleeding stopping 13 shots in the next
period and a half, allowing BU to mount its third-period rally.
Terriers hurt their own cause with a number of undisciplined penalties while other calls by the referees were extremely questionable.
Coach Albie O'Connell said: “I’m not
going to comment on officials." Then, he added:
“I will say that diving in that game that was called [for penalties] was
unreal. Karma didn’t catch up to that one, but it will.”
