UConn rallies past BU in overtime

A minute away from a come-from-behind road win, BU yielded an extra-attacker goal by UConn and then an overtime goal in a costly 4-3 loss to the Huskies at the XL Center in Hartford. With the defeat, BU dropped to fifth place, passed by Lowell and Maine, who each won last night.

Connecticut opened the scoring midway through the opening period when Carter Turnbull skated from the left corner into the crease and slid the puck home inside the right post. The home team doubled its lead on a power play late in the period when Kale Howarth converted a rebound after Sam Tucker made the initial save on a shot from the point.

BU got on the board early in the second period on Case McCarthy’s snapshot from the top of the right circle, assisted by Domenick Fensore and Patrick Harper.  Seven minutes later, the Terriers tied the scored when Robert Mastrosimone skated from the left corner toward the net and found Jack DeBoer on the doorstep. The sophomore stuffed the puck past Tomas Vomacka. David Farrance had the secondary assist.

Then at 17:35, Captain Patrick Crotty controlled the puck behind the UConn net and set up Cam Crotty for a one-timer from the slot and a 3-2 Terrier lead. Jake Wise also assisted.

As was the case last Saturday against UNH, BU went into the third period protecting a one-goal lead and again was able to limit the opponent’s scoring chances—although Tucker made an exceptional save on Alexander Payusov at the four-minute mark.  The Huskies pulled Vomacka for an extra attacker and at 19:04 it paid off.  After Tucker made an initial save, the rebound trickled to Ben Freeman at the right post and he backhanded the puck past Tucker.

Just 19 seconds into overtime after a BU turnover along the left boards, Freeman’s pass to the goalmouth was redirected home by Payusov.
