Terriers double up Vermont; Women do the same

Trevor Zegras’ power-play goal broke a third-period 2-2 tie, sending BU to a 4-2 win over Vermont in Burlington last night. With the win, the Terriers moved into third place in Hockey East, a point ahead of UMass Lowell and Providence, two points ahead of Northeastern.
The Catamounts got on the board first—at 8:41 of the opening period—when Derek Lodermeirer took a stretch pass behind the BU defense, skated in and beat Ashton Abel high to the stick side.
BU pulled even five minutes into the second period when Case McCarthy skated into the offensive zone along the right boards, cut into the right circle and fired a severe angle shot past Stefanos Lekkas for his first career goal. Assists went to Matthew Quercia and Domenick Fensore.
Terriers took the lead in the opening minutes of the third period. Fensore set up McCarthy for a one-timer from center point. Gabriel Chabot deflected the high shot down to the ice and then slid the loose puck into the open side for his fifth goal. Zegras also assisted.
Vermont responded a minute later with Christian Evers firing home a shot from the left point after BU failed to clear the zone. Minutes later, an unmarked Evers fired from the right faceoff circle but Abel stopped the shot as well as Evers’ follow-up attempt.
Two power plays gave the hosts a chance to take the lead but BU killed both in a penalty-filled third period that saw Fensore hit with a tripping penalty and a misconduct.
BU went on its own power play at 14:61. David Farrance sent a cross-ice pass to Zegras in the left circle and the freshman’s wrist shot went through a defenseman’s legs and just inside the post to Lekkas’ stick side for his eighth goal of the season.
In the final minutes, Vermont pulled Lekkas for an extra skater but Jake Wise slid the puck to Patrick Curry in the neutral zone and the captain hit the empty net to make it 4-2. For Curry, it was his team-high 14th goal, one more than his previous career best.
Freshman Abel was solid again in goal, stopping 28 UVM shots, including four on third-period power plays.
"Special teams were the difference in the third period," said Coach Albie O'Connell following the Terriers third road victory of the season.
