Game Day: BU hosts BC; Women fall in 2OT

Terriers take on #4 BC at Agganis Arena in a 7 p.m. contest that will air on NESN and be live-streamed on CBS All-Access. In two previous meeting, BC edged the Terriers, 4-3, at Conte Forum, while BU defeated its arch-rival, 5-4, in the Beanpot semi-final (technically a tie).

Concluding BU’s month-long activities commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1980 US Olympic gold medal, the “BU Four”—Jim Craig, Mike Eruzione, Jack O’Callahan and Dave Silk—will reunite for a pregame ceremony.

The first-place Eagles have won their last six games and boast the highest-scoring offense in Division 1 with 4.10 goals per game. Senior Julius Mattila leads BC in points (40) and assists (30), while junior Logan Hutsko and freshman Alex Newhook each have 18 goals. Goalie Spencer Knight’s 2.01 GAA is ninth best nationally.

With three regular-season games remaining, BU sits in sixth place in Hockey East and can finish anywhere from second to ninth.

David Farrance, with 38 points, leads all defensemen in points per game with 1.26.  Patrick Harper is 12th among all skaters with 1.24, while Trevor Zegras is third among freshmen with 1.10.  BU will be without sophomore Matt Quercia, who will miss the remainder of the season with an upper body injury.

Women’s Team

#8 Terriers dropped the opening game of their quarterfinal series with Maine, 3-2, in double overtime. To continue their season, the Terriers must win today’s game (3 p.m.) and a third game on Sunday (also 3 p.m.).

Maine goalie Carly Jackson turned aside 59 BU shots, including 22 in the two overtime periods. The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead after one period and doubled it in the opening minutes of the middle period.  A Nara Elia power play goal narrowed it to 2-1 after two periods. Late in the third period, Elia converted a pass from Emma Wuthrich to knot the score at two apiece.

The teams battled through 35 minutes of overtime until a centering pass glanced off Ida Kuoppala’s skate and past Corinne Schroeder. The tally was reviewed and allowed to stand. Schroeder had made 37 saves for BU.
