Terriers’ rally falls short; Farabee's first; Women edged by NU

BU dropped the opener of its two-games series at Maine, 4-2, at Alfond Arena. The Terriers battled back from two-goal deficits twice to narrow the lead, but couldn’t produce an equalizer. BU goals were scored by Captain Patrick Curry and freshman Jamie Armstrong.

Despite an evenly played opening period, BU found itself down, 2-0, after one. Maine opened the scoring on a power play at 4:19. The Black Bears moved the puck quickly from Sam Tucker’s right side to the left where an unmarked Ben Poisson one-timed the puck into the empty side. The hosts doubled their lead in the final minutes of the period on the rush with Sam Rennaker’s shot from the bottom of the circle going in off the crossbar. BU got on the board midway through the middle period with the teams skating 4-on-4. Armstrong stripped the puck from a Maine skater at the BU blue line and it slid to Matt Quercia, who pushed it ahead to Armstrong for a 2-on-1 break. The freshman closed to the high slot and beat Jeremy Swayman high to the glove side for his first career goal.Energized by the tally BU pressed the attack but still trailed, 2-1, after two.

The Terrier momentum continued into the final period with BU registering the first 11 shots—including Robert Mastrosimone’s set-up of Trevor Zegas—but none got past Swayman. Halfway through the period, Alex Vlasic turned the puck over at center ice, leading to a Maine 3-on-2 rush finished by Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup for a 3-1 lead.

After killing a Maine power play, BU stayed on offense but wasn’t able to score again until the final minutes when Curry fired home a shot from the high slot for an extra-attacker tally. Assists went to Quercia and Alex Brink. A Maine empty-netter produced the final goal and a 4-2 victory.

Despite putting 41 shots on net, including 17 in the final period, Coach Albie O’Connell was dissatisfied with the lack of grade A scoring chances and failing to bury the ones they had. He noted ““We didn’t shoot the puck very well tonight. [It’s about] bearing down in those moments and putting it in the back of the net.”

O’Connell added, “I think [Swayman] saw a lot of the pucks. There wasn’t enough traffic.”

One bright note for BU was winning 41 of 71 faceoffs, with Quercia going 6-0 on draws.

The teams are back on the ice tonight with a 6:00 p.m. ET start.
