Terriers settle for tie with UVM

A late third period goal by Vermont cancelled a one-goal BU lead as the Terriers had to settle for a 3-3 overtime tie with the Catamounts at Agganis Arena. Freshman Sam Stevens scored his first two collegiate goals and David Farrance added his team-high 10th as BU took the lead after two periods.

Just two minutes into the game, BU got on the board with Stevens’s first tally. Domenick Fensore skated down the right boards and sent a goalmouth pass to Stevens, who jammed the puck past Stefanos Lekkas. Case McCarthy also assisted.

Midway through the period, BU was called for two major-penalty infractionsGabriel Chabot for contact to the head and Kasper Katkansalo for hitting from behind—creating a four-minute 5-on-3 advantage. The Terriers limited Vermont to just one shot, but that one, a wrister from the top of the right circle by Christian Evers sailed past a screened Sam Tucker.

Vermont took the lead on a power play early in the second period. On the rush, Thomas Beretta passed to a trailing Derek Lodermeier who closed to the high slot and wristed a shot home.

BU responded just three minutes later and again it was the Fensore-Stevens combination. The freshman defenseman intercepted a pass at the redline and skated down the left side for a sharp-angle shot defended by Lekkas. Stevens crashed the cage and shoveled the rebound into the net.

BU regained the lead two minutes later on a power play. Matt Quercia and Captain Patrick Curry worked the puck to Farrance at the right point. The junior defenseman skated to the left face-off circle and whipped a shot past Lekkas high to the glove side.

BU held the lead through most of a back-and-forth third period. At 15:56, Vermont’s William Lemay gained the puck behind the BU net and his centering attempt went off Cam Crotty’s stick into the air. An unmarked Alex Esposito gloved it down and pushed the puck past Tucker to knot the score.

BU had the only three shots on goal during overtime, which included a Terrier power play, but couldn’t produce a game-winner. Tucker had 34 saves, while Lekkas had 32.

BU freshman Trevor Zegras was a healthy scratch, following his game misconduct penalty in Friday's game.

Farrance's goalhis eighth power play tallyallowed him to extend his point streak to seven games, during which he's recorded 12 points on seven goals and five assists.

“David is about has hot as I’ve ever seen a guy that I’ve been involved in coaching,” said Coach Albie O’Connell. “He’s playing on another level right now.”

Stevens has four points (2G,2A) in three games.

BU Oldtimer's Terrier Takeaway

1. Two positive elements in BU's play early in the season have pretty much disappeared recently. The team has a serious problem clearing its own end of the ice, thereby eliminating odd man rushes and scoring opportunities off the initial drive into the opponents' d-zone. Also, BU's forecheck has been much weaker over the past several games, limiting extended, sustained possession in the attack zone. Certainly, these factors do not bode well for the Cornell game.

2.  Robert Mastrosimone had a good weekend. He was always around the puck and was a solid presence in front of the Vermont net.

3. Ethan Phillips showed more improvement and appears to have adjusted to the speed of the D1 game.

4. Sam Tucker had another solid weekend in net.

5. Sam Stevens made a welcomed return to the lineup. He'd be a nice center between Cockerill and Amonte, at some point.

Looking ahead

2020 recruit Drew Commesso stopped all 28 shots he faced in the NTDP 18s’ 2-0 shutout of Tri-City. It was Commesso’s third shutout of the season, matching his total from his U17 season.

2020 recruit Wilmer Skoog scored a pair of power play goals and added an assist in NAHL Maryland’s 5-4 loss to Johnstown. The left-shot center is tied for the NAHL lead in points with 32 and in goals with 15.

2020 recruit Braden Doyle assisted on the game-winning overtime goal by former Terrier Mark Cheremeta as Dubuque edged Des Moines, 3-2.

2021 recruits Jeremy Wilmer and Tyler Boucher each scored a goal in the NTDP U17s’ 6-5 overtime win against Sioux City. Boucher also added an assist. Wilmer has six goals and Boucher has five for Team USA.

Women’s Team

Nara Elia’s overtime goal lifted the #11 Terriers past Vermont in overtime at Gutterson Field House Saturday. BU had taken a 2-0 lead on Nadia Mattivi’s power play goal in the first period and Jesse Compher’s short-hander early in the second. Mattivi’s tally was the first collegiate goal for the freshman from Italy.

Vermont cut the lead in half with a goal late in the second period and pulled even at 13:31 of the third. With just over a minute left in overtime, Deziray De Sousa sent Kristina Schuler into the UVM zone for a shot that was saved. Elia, trailing the play, rapped home the rebound for a 3-2 win. Kate Stuart stopped 35 shots to gain the victory.

The teams complete the two-game series at Walter Brown Arena today at 2 p.m. with a free live-stream available.
