Terrier used a four-goal second period to cruise to a 5-1 exhibition game win against Holy Cross at Walter Brown Arena. Playing an opponent in front of a crowd (1,992) for the first time since March 2020, BU scored twice on power plays and once short-handed in a penalty-filled contest--due in large part to chippy--and sometimes thuggish--play by the Crusaders.
BU outshot Holy Cross 39-20 and yielded few grade A chances. An efficient and calm Drew Commesso turned aside 19 chances.
From the initial face off, the pace was fast for both teams, but it was the Crusaders who struck first. At 11:37, Jack Ricketts got behind the BU defense on a breakaway and beat Commesso high with a forehand shot. It took less than a minute for the Terriers to respond. On a power play, sophomore Luke Tuch fed Matt Brown below the Crusader goal line. The transfer from Lowell skated behind the net found freshman Tyler Boucher for wrister that beat goalie Matt Radomsky.

Early in the second period, BU scored with some slick passing in the waning seconds of a power play. Ethan Phillips, near the right point fed Wilmer Skoog skating through the left circle. The junior from Sweden slid the puck past a defender across to junior Robert Mastrosimone for a one-timer that proved to be the game-winner.

Midway through the period, freshman Tristan Amonte freed up a puck behind the Crusader goal line. Sam Stevens' jam attempt was stopped as was Brian Carrabes follow-up, but the puck rebounded to freshman Ty Gallagher who rifled it home from between the circles for a 3-1 lead.

Less than two minutes later, BU added to the lead. Captain Logan Cockerill raced into the offensive zone but his shot was deflected behind the Crusader cage. Junior defenseman Case McCarthy picked up the loose puck and banked it in off goalie Thomas Gale.

At 14:54 with the Terriers killing a penalty, Stevens stripped a defenseman at the point, raced up the ice past a defender and slid the puck through Gale's five hole. Second period shots were 14-6 BU.

Despite having to kill four penalties in the final period, BU maintained the four-goal lead and limited the visitors to just seven shots.
The Terriers refused to be intimidated by the Crusaders after-the-whistle hits and gave as well as they took. When a Holy Cross skater grabbed Max Kaufman around the neck from behind after Steven's short-hander, the fifth year forward flipped his tormentor over his head onto the ice with a WWE-quality move.
BU was a perfect seven for seven on penalty kills with one short-hand goal and scored on two out of nine power plays.
“It’s exciting to play again,” BU head coach Albie O’Connell. “It’s exciting to see the band and get fans in the building. I think that was a big boost after our guys went out for warmups.”
“All in all, there were some really good moments,” he continued. “There were some sloppy moments. Overall, we were really happy with our effort.[But] We really have to improve in a lot of areas. Our penalty kill was really good. Our competitive spirit was good.”
He noted strong efforts by Stevens (1G,1A) and Mastrosimone “who was terrific, I think he had nine shots. I thought Ethan [Philips] was great. He was darting around and using his speed. I was excited he was back and in the line-up.”

Women’s Team
Terriers completed a weekend sweep of New Hampshire with a convincing 5-0 blanking of the Wildcats in BU’s home opener at Walter Brown Arena. Freshman goalie Callie Shanahan stopped all16 shots en route to her first career shutout. Senior Mackenna Parker and junior Julia Nearis led the attack, each scoring a goal and two helpers.
Citing the “excitement of being at home and having fans in Brown Arena,” Coach Brian Durocher called his team’s dominant effort “thorough by every line and every D,” adding, “Callie had some nice saves along the way.”
BU outshot UNH 15 to 5 in the opening period, but didn’t get on the board until 17:38 when senior Emma Wuthrich shot a puck through traffic and into the net, assisted by Parker and Nearis.
Shots were more equal in the second period (UNH 9, BU 8), but the Terriers broke things open with three tallies.
At 6:38, freshman Kylie Roberts scored her first collegiate goal, one-timing a Nearis centering pass. Sophomore Andi Calderone also had a helper. Just a minute later, sophomore Julia Shaunessy rocketed home a shot from the blueline with assists to Parker, senior Courtney Correia.
Then late in the period, Parker broke into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1. Her shot from the right circle glanced off goalie Ava Boutilier’s stick and into the cage.
Early in the final period, seniors Alex Allan and Catherine Foulem set up Nearis at the left boards. She dangled past a defender and, from the face off dot, wristed home her second goal of the season.
Shanahan, who yielded two goals in the first six minutes of Friday’s win, now has five consecutive shutout periods and a scoreless skein of nearly 104 minutes.
