Terriers stumble in home opener; Women tie UNH

Connecticut broke open a 1-1 game with a pair of goals in the second period and two more in the third, ruining the Terriers’ home opener with a dominating 5-1 win. BU’s only tally was scored by junior transfer Matt Brown.

After the game, Coach Albie O’Connell didn’t mince words, calling his team’s effort “a complete 180” from Friday’s win, adding that the Terriers had “played like a bunch of boys” and that he “didn’t like the effort or smarts. We had our chances.”

He did offer praise for goalie Drew Commesso, who made 25 saves and kept the score close for two periods, and for Brown, who he said played even better than on Friday night.

Just like Friday's game, UConn opened the scoring. Midway through the period, a shot off the right side of the BU cage was controlled by Jachym Kondelik who found Marc Gatcomb unmarked at the left post for a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, BU responded. Joe Campolieto took a pass from Cade Webber, skated up the left side and fired a hard, low shot on Darion Hanson. The rebound went directly to Brown in stride below the right circle and he filled the half-empty net to tie the score.

Less than a minute into the second period, the Huskies took the lead for good, scoring on the rush.  Gatcom got a step on Case McCarthy, drove to the net and dished the puck to Jonny Evans, Hockey East’s top scorer a year ago, who beat  Commesso high to the glove side.

Approaching the ten-minute mark, a BU defensive zone turnover led to Ryan Tverberg breaking in alone and connecting on a backhander for a 3-1 lead. BU went on a power play in the final minute of the period, but couldn’t convert despite setting up a grade A chance in the slot.

The penalty continued into the third period and just as it expired, Brown nearly scored as Hanson made an acrobatic save.

Two minutes later, BU appeared to score when Max Kaufman followed his own shot, gained control behind the UConn net and banged the puck home, however a cross-checking call on Tyler Boucher erased the tally. O’Connell indicated that the no-goal was a “big turning point” and that things went downhill from there.

Tverberg scored his second goal at 5:55 and then Carter Berger sniped a wrist shot past a screened Commesso at 11:10 to complete the scoring. At that point, O’Connell replaced Commesso with sophomore Vinny Duplessis, who stopped the final seven shots.

Women’s Team

The Terriers’ three-game winning streak to open the season came to end at the Whittemore Center as BU and New Hampshire played to a 3-3 overtime tie. The Wildcats won the ensuing shootout, earning the extra point for the standings.

Coach Brian Durocher’s team received goals from freshmen Christina Vote and Kylie Roberts and from senior Courtney Correia.

The Wildcats opened the scoring early in the first period but just over a minute later, Vote redirected an Alex Allan shot to tie the score at one apiece. Julia Nearis also had a helper.

In the middle period, it was BU scoring first just three minutes in when Roberts, perfectly positioned outside the crease, cashed in the rebound of Correia’s shot from the left circle. Senior Mackenna Parker also assisted as BU took a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats responded late in the period also converting a rebound.

The third period would see yet another trading of goals. Terriers again scored in the opening minutes as Parker’s pass from the right boards to the goalmouth was deftly deflected by Correia. At the seven-minute mark Tamara Thierus followed her own deflected attempt and scored from the bottom of the left circle, beating BU’s Kate Stuart.

Neither team scored during the 3-on-3 overtime, although BU had four shots during a power play. New Hampshire had the only tally in the shootout to earn the extra point in the standings.
