Last season, BU and Lowell met twice. In the final regular-season game at Tsongas Arena, the teams played to a 3-3 overtime tie with the Terriers winning the shootout on Robert Mastrosimone’s goal. A week later, the River Hawks defeated BU, 2-1, in the Hockey East quarterfinals at Walter Brown Arena. Matt Brown, who later transferred to BU, scored Lowell’s first goal.
The River Hawks (2-1-1) will be seeing their first conference action after splitting a series at Arizona State and then tying and defeating Michigan State at Tsongas. The offense is led by last season’s top scorers, junior Anders Lee (16 points) and senior Reid Stefanson (15), along with senior Lucas Condotta and freshman Matt Crasa who each have five points this season. Crassa had three goals. Senior Owen Savory and sophomore Henry Welsch have split the goaltending thus far and each has one win.
Junior Wilmer Skoog, who scored three goals last weekend, is BU’s leader in goals with four and points with seven—one point less than his 2020-21 total. He’s followed by classmates Domenick Fensore (G,5A), Mastrosimone (3G,2A) and Ethan Phillips (G,4A). Sophomore Dylan Peterson had a hat trick (video) in Saturday’s win, while freshman defenseman Ty Gallagher had three assists, earning Rookie of the Week honors.
Following the 8-6 win against Merrimack, sophomore goalie Drew
Commesso’s GAA inflated to 3.27. He has started all six games.
During his weekly media call (see link below), Coach Albie O’Connell indicated that Brown, injured last weekend, had been skating and he hoped to have the junior transfer back in the line-up.
Assessing the River Hawks, O'Connell said, “They just play a strong solid game and they’ve got obviously some weapons. Not a team that’s gonna beat themselves, so we’re gonna have to play some good games to try to beat them.”
He added that to do that, BU would have to manage the puck well, make good decisions to get its skating game going and be simultaneously competitive and disciplined.
