UPDATED: O'Connell's analysis; poll story; Rookie honors for Shanahan

Terrier Athletics feature writer Scott Weighart joined Head Coach Albie O’Connell to analyze Saturday’s exhibition win as well as where his team stands. While the fourth-year head coach ticked off numerous positives, he also is clear-eyed about the improvements necessary to make this 100th journey for BU Hockey a successful one.

"We're a competitive group. I think we've got a lot of depth. Arguably our best line tonight was our fourth line. That's a good sign. But we definitely need to get in better game shape. Our penalty kill was aggressive; it was very good. I think we need to improve our power play. Although we scored a couple of goals, I think our breakout can improve. We've got to shoot more and we need our top players to execute in those situations. There was some youthfulness: We took too many on the men ice penalties, which was frustrating. There were a couple of miscues in that regard, and that can end up costing you your season or moving on when you have those type of mistakes."

Poll Story

Terriers remained at #10 in both the USCHO Weekly Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. UMass, swept by Minnesota-Duluth, dropped to seventh in the USCHO poll. BC and Providence inched up a spot to sixth and 11th respectively, while Northeastern moved into the top 20, landing at #18.

#10 also is where BU landed in NCAA.org's Evan Marinofsky's first Power 10 ranking of the season.

Looking back

The Bruins regular-season line-up will feature a trio of Terriers: Charley Coyle, Matt Grzelcyk and Charlie McAvoy. In yesterday’s 2-1 exhibition loss to Philadelphia in overtime, however, it was three Flyers—Joel Farabee (photo), Adam Clendening and Max Williman who made the Flyers’ win a three-dog night. None of them figured in the scoring and only Farabee, who led Philadelphia in goals last season with 20 and nearly doubled his rookie year points total, is expected to make the season-opening roster.

Women’s Team

Freshman netminder Callie Shanahan was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week after backstopping BU’s sweep of New Hampshire. The Commerce, Michigan native stopped 42 shots in the two games, yielding only two goals. Shanahan, who won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Under-18 Championship, didn’t allow a goal over the final 113:52 of the home-and-home series.
