#16 Terriers were edged by Merrimack, 3-2, in the front end of a home-and-home at Lawler Rink. BU briefly held a 2-1 lead late in the second period on the strength of two Wilmer Skoog goals. The loss drops BU to 2-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Hockey East.
The Warriors got on the board first following a turnover in the BU zone due to some casual passing. Merrimack captain Max Newton stole the puck near the left boards and found Alex Jeffries alone in the crease for a quick shot and a 1-0 lead.
BU matched that tally on the second of its three power play opportunities in the opening period. Domenick Fensore took a pass from Ethan Phillips at center point and his hard wrist shot was redirected home by Skoog who was camped in the slot.

In the middle period, three Terrier penalties contributed to a 18-8 shot advantage for the home team. Junior goalie Drew Commesso fended off a flurry of close-in shots midway through the period to keep the score tied.

At 13:20 during a penalty kill, Matt Brown had a breakaway, but his attempt to go five-hole was snuffed out by goalie Zachary Borgiel. Three minutes later, Skoog skated into the zone. His cross-ice pass didn’t connect with Phillips, but the junior wing recovered the puck, surrounded by three defenders, and backhanded it to Skoog in the slot for a one-timer that beat Borgiel to the glove side for BU’s only lead of the game.

The lead last less than three minutes. A collision with Steven Jandric at the BU blueline disrupted both Terrier defenseman and the puck slid to Jake Durflinger who broke in alone and beat Commesso high to the glove side.
The eventual game-winner came at 6:31 of the third period. With Merrimack controlling the puck in their offensive zone, Matt Copponi passed to Adam Arvedson, who had just come onto the ice. His one-timer from just inside the blueline beat Commesso high,as he was moving across the crease.

BU pressed for an equalizer, but tight defense by the Warriors limited their opportunities. With Commesso pulled for an extra attacker, Tyler Boucher redirected Brown's shot past Borgiel, but it was waved off for a high stick call.
While BU kept its penalty kill streak going with three kills, making it a perfect 19 for 19, Merrimack outshot the Terriers, 31-20, and dominated the face off dot, 38-25,
A clearly frustrated Coach Albie O’Connell didn’t hide his displeasure about his team’s efforts on offense. He said: “We had many opportunities to shoot the puck tonight that we passed up on,” adding that his team was “borderline inept at the offensive blueline.”
Addressing the Warriors’ second tally, he pointed out that “You can’t have two defensemen run into each other, then [have them] go on a breakaway, and then chase him down and then take a penalty on it.”
