Game Day: Exhibition vs. Holy Cross at WBA; Women double up UNH

Heading into the program's 100th season, the #10/10 Terriers hit the ice tonight for an exhibition game against Holy Cross at Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. for the contest that will be live-streamed on College Sports Live.

BU returns 11 of 12 top scorers, led by Jay O'Brien, Luke Tuch and captain Logan Cockerill, as well as all three goalies, including Hockey East All-Rookie team member Drew Commesso.

With three seniors from last seasonCockerill, Max Kaufman and Joe Campolietotaking advantage of the NCAA's allowing them an extra season of eligibility, BU has one of its largest rosters ever with 24 returnees and six newcomers.

The Terriers and Crusaders have met six times, beginning in 1928-29 and most recently in 2013-14, with BU winning five times.

Holy Cross, which named Bill Riga as its head coach last May, returns three of its top five scorers and its starting goalie, Erik Gordon, from the team that finished 4-12-0 last season.

Looking ahead

2022 or 2023 recruit Nick Roukounakis assisted on the game-winner in West Kelowna's 5-4 win against Vernon.

2023 recruit Michael Chambre stopped 12 of 13 shots in a relief effort for the NTDP U17s, who dropped a 7-4 decision to Youngstown. 2024 recruit Kai Janviriya record ed his second assist of the season on a first-period U17 goal.

Looking back

Rookie defenseman David Farrance picked up an assist in the Predators’ 6-2 win against defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

Joel Farabee scored both Flyers’ goals in Philadelphia’s 4-2 loss to the Bruins.

Doyle Somerby, who was in the Minnesota Wild training camp on a PTO, has been assigned to the AHL Iowa Wild.

 

Women’s Team

Terriers rallied from a 2-1 deficit after one period and scored the next three goals for a 4-2 win against New Hampshire in the season-opener at the Whittemore Center in Durham.

BU and UNH will complete the home-and-home today with the Terriers' home opener at Walter Brown Arena starting at 2 p.m.

BU yielded a goal to the Wildcats’ Kira Juodikis just 22 seconds into the game. Three minutes later senior Mackenna Parker matched it with a one-timer from the right circle following Nadia Mattivi’s no-look, backhand pass from the corner. Catherine Foulem also assisted.

UNH regained the lead at the six-minute mark on Juodikis second goal. The Wildcats, with 12 shots, had the edge in the first period

At 2:01 of the second period, sophomore Andi Calderone, at the point, kept the puck in the zone and he deflected pass was controlled by senior Courtney Correia in the high slot. The senior center fired the puck home to knot the score at two apiece.

Just over ten minutes later on a power play, Courreia and Calderone set up junior Julia Nearis to the left of the UNH cage and the junior wristed it home for the eventual game winner.

Senior defenseman Alex Allan wrapped up the scoring firing an empty netter from the red line, assisted by sophomore Madison Cardaci and Correia.

In her first collegiate start, freshman goalie Callie Shanahan stopped 26 of 28 shots and kept her cage clean over the final 44 minutes of the game, including 16 saves in the 2nd and 3rd periods.
